Shooting in Kentucky Leaves Three Dead
(MENAFN) At least three individuals lost their lives, among them the alleged assailant, and multiple others were wounded during a violent shooting rampage on Sunday in the U.S. state of Kentucky.
"I'm heartbroken to share the shooting in Lexington (city) at Richmond Road Baptist Church has taken the lives of two people," Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear stated on X.
The series of events began around 11:36 a.m. local time (1536GMT) when the perpetrator shot a Kentucky State Police officer on Terminal Drive, located near Blue Grass Airport.
According to Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers, the trooper had pulled over a vehicle after being alerted by a license plate scanner in the Versailles Road area.
The gunman opened fire on the trooper, who is currently in stable condition and undergoing medical care, and subsequently fled the location.
Weathers clarified that the gunfire did not take place inside the airport terminal and that the incident was not connected to any airport operations.
The suspect is then believed to have hijacked a vehicle in the 3700 block of Belleau Drive and proceeded to Richmond Road Baptist Church, where he began firing on the church premises.
